Shatt Al-Basra combined cycle power plant project

The Shatt Al-Basra combined cycle power plant project is located in Basra governate south of Iraq, approximately 10 km to the west from the Al-Basra city, and the area of the power plant (440) acres and the power plant consists of two parts:

  • Part 1 The Shatt Al-Basra combined cycle power plant project is located in Basra governate south of Iraq, approximately 10 km to the west from the Al-Basra city, and the area of the power plant (440) acres and the power plant consists of two parts: Part 1: The gas shatt power plant for the simple cycle has been established for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity and the plant consists of (10) units of GE type (PG9171) design card (125) MW per unit and the total capacity of the power plant (1250) MW, and this plant works on three types of fuel (natural gas, Gas oil, and heavy fuel).

  • Part 2 Shatt Al-Basra combined cycle power plant project is an environmentally friendly plant and is an expansion of the simple cycle at a total cost of ($1,001,000,000), where the chinese company CMEC was contracted on (12/10/201) 6) On the design, procurement and construction(EPC) of this plant in accordance with international specifications and standards which have been approved by the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, CMEC has contracted with the Chinese company (NWEPDI) to prepare the basic and detailed designs of the project and approved the basic designs on (20/5/2017) for (169) volumes as well as Approval of the detailed designs dated (28 August 2019) for (638) volumes, under which the project equipment was manufactured and delivered to the plant site with a number of shipments reached (91) shipments and a total volume (165,000)m3, with total of shipments cargo weight to (54,000) tons.

The contracts have been made with Siemens Germany's company for supplying steam turbine, generators and WUXI to supply steam boilers, while the balance of the equipment has been provided from various origins according to approved specifications.
The construction of the project has been commenced dated 29th January 2019 the period of the project as agreed with the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity is 30 months, and the number of international foreign, and local manpower (administrative and technical) in the project has reached 1,350 people per day to complete civil works, construction work, supervision, and operation of the power plant.

Expantion Work

The project is the extension of the existing simple cycle gas turbine power plant 10*125MW (Gas Turbine GE model: PG9171E & Generator model 9A5) which was manufactured by GE Co. to add combine cycle part with capacity up to 659.4 MW (5 units of 131.88 MW) as an EPC contract.

The Design and the equipment of combine Cycle part should be fully compatible with the existing simple cycle part of the plant.

The fuel system is duel types Natural Gas and liquid fuel (Light diesel oil or heavy fuel oil and crude oil).
